New Soul, New R&B and the Brit Awards

I am watching the Brit Awards - just got side tracked - and had to drop a couple lines on a trend that I am digging. There is this new flavour of R&B/Soul that I am hearing that is giving me hope for the record industry. This was first tweaked with the release of Christina Aguilera’s latest “Back to Basics” - please bear with me, I’ll get to the point, quick - and I had to admit that “Aint no other man” definitely had a throw-back feel.
What made this post do it for me was this clip I found of Paul Weller & Amy Winehouse: Heard it through the grapevine. The pic of Ian Curtis put it all over the top, but that’s just personal. Paul Weller, of The Jam fame, and this Brit Award winner Amy Winehouse do certain justice to this classic. But at the end of the day, it was hearing Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen that sparked a little exploration.

Agreed. There is no doubt that English soul is entering the arena of cool music. Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Joss Stone…even Corinne Bailey Rae are making things interesting…
