Virtual Silver Screen

Posted by Brett Tackaberry on July 19th, 2005

76design recently finished a project for Library and Archives Canada entitled Virtual Silver Screen. It’s a collection of some of the earliest films made in Canada, covering topics from accounts of World War I, some of the best reasons to buy a tractor for your farm, to why you should take a shower everyday. These artifacts offer a lot of insight into how the revolutionary new medium of film was being used to broadcast information, educate and entertain Canadians.

For accessibility purposes, the site is offered in both HTML and Flash. The Flash version offers streaming FLV videos and a completely XML-driven backend that the client can administer to edit the content on the site and add new videos in the future.

This site was a lot of fun to build and we’re really proud of the finished product (we even got to do a photo shoot at an old theatre!).

Update: the Virtual Silver Screen site was selected as Macromedia’s Site of The Day for August 17, 2005!
